Music by Fela Anikulapo-Kuti

Direct from broadway!

“There should be dancing in the streets.”

- The New York Times

First, you’ll feel it in your feet.
Then you’ll feel it in your soul .
That’s the undeniable power of FELA!

Legendary Nigerian Fela Kuti was a musical dynamo and  a political powder keg who

used his supercharged and  sexy Afrobeat sound and charismatic spirit to ignite and

inspire a generation to dare challenge a government of oppression.

"More than a musical. An ecstatic phenomenon!"

- Time Out, New York

FELA ! is both rave and theatrical wonder. Thanks to Fela’s  captivating music and the

visionary direction and choreography of Tony Award® winner Bill T. Jones, this tale of

courage, passion and  love will shake you: body and soul.

In addition to his Tony Award® for FELA !, Bill T. Jones was celebrated  in 2010

with a Kennedy Center Honor along with Merle Haggard, Jerry Herman, Paul McCartney

and Oprah Winfrey.

Green Day's American Idiot

March 13 -  April 22, 2012

Straight from Broadway!

"It's an experience... thrilling, emotionally charged, and as moving

as any Broadway musical I've seen this year!"

- Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

Slinging razor guitars , thundering drums and an anti-hero named Johnny. Not the prelude of typical entries in the canon of musical   theatre. But these elements herald a groundbreaking American musical all  the same: with the burning passion of characters who yearn for something  more, songs bursting with emotion and a story that dares you to feel and  celebrate and hope.

The music of Green Day and the lyrics of lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong captured the zeitgeist of a generation with its Grammy® Award-winning  multi-platinum album. American Idiot puts those raw emotions front and center in a highly theatrical and thoroughly satisfying rock opera that burns  up the stage.

Monster hits like “Boulevard of Broken Dreams”, “21 Guns.,” “Wake Me Up When September Ends,” “Holiday” and the title track soar like they  were written for the stage under the direction of Tony Award® winner Michael Mayer (Spring Awakening), choreography by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett (Black Watch) and music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Pulitzer Prize winner Tom Kitt (Next to Normal).

Just Announced!

The Kennedy Center’s critically acclaimed Broadway production of James Goldman

and Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award®-winning musical “Follies” will transfer to the

Ahmanson Theatre for six weeks only, May 3 through June 9, 2012.

“We are tremendously proud to bring the Kennedy Center’s lush Broadway production of ‘Follies’ to the Ahmanson,” said Michael Ritchie, CTG Artistic Director. “It is a coup for CTG to get it and a gift for Los Angeles audiences to receive it. With changes in the Ahmanson schedule, both the postponement of ‘Funny Girl’ and the re-scheduling of ‘Fela!’ to a December – January presentation, the timing was perfect for us to present this acclaimed production in the spring. “We are currently in discussions to bring members of the Broadway cast to L.A. and will confirm the casting as soon as negotiations are completed.”

Follies

May 3 -  June 9, 2012

When former members of the “Weismann Follies” reunite on the eve of their theatre's demolition, two couples remember their past and face the harsher realities of the present. Reminiscing about their younger selves and the years gone by, the crumbling theatre brings back memories for both couples of good times and bad. Containing such well-known songs as “Broadway Baby,” “I’m Still Here,” “Too Many Mornings,” “Could I Leave You?” and “Losing My Mind,” “Follies” echoes the songs, exuberance and romance of the vaudeville days between the two World Wars.

“A revival for the ages . . . ,” said Linda Winer of Newsday, “. . . a production worthy of this magnificent monument to musical theater.”

War Horse

June 13 - July 22, 2012

Based on a Novel by Michael Morpurgo

Adapted for the Stage by Nick Stafford

In association with Handspring Puppet Company

Directed  by Marianne Elliot and Tom Morris

WINNER! 5 Tony Awards® including Best Play of the year!

In addition, Adrian Kohler and Basil Jones were presented with a Special Tony Award

for Handspring Puppet Company's Artistic Achievement.

“WAR HORSE is so exhilarating that it makes you rejoice to be alive. Its sheer skill and invention are simply awe-inspiring.”

- The Times of London

This remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship opened to rave reviews in London and New York.  Coming exclusively to the Ahmanson.

National Theatre of Great Britain production

England, 1914. As World War One begins, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped from England to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, before finding  himself alone in no man’s land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and he embarks on a treacherous mission to find him and bring him home.

You’ve never seen anything quite like War Horse. This epic tale is both highly inventive spectacle and powerfully moving drama, with one of the largest casts (over 30) ever assembled on the Ahmanson stage. This odyssey of a boy and his horse took London by storm before opening on Broadway in Spring 2011.

"On Broadway, War Horse Enters the Winners Circle!"

-- TIME Magazine

The horses in this amazing piece of theatre are life-size AND life-like: crafted in cane, steel, leather and aircraft cables, by the extraordinary Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa, they embody the fire, spirit and nobility of living, breathing steeds.

"This spellbinding show runs full gallop with theatrical magic. It is epic and intimate and compels you to hold your breath in anticipation."

-- New York Daily News

This National Theatre of Great Britain production will thrill audiences at the Ahmanson. War Horse, filled with stirring music and song, is an astonishing event every family with children over 13 will enjoy.

"GENIUS isn't too strong a word to  describe this astonishing production."

- Daily Telegraph, London

  More About the Show:

War Horse'

Handspring Puppet Co. & the genius puppetry behind War Horse.

"Puppets always have to try to be alive," says Adrian Kohler of the Handspring Puppet Company, a gloriously ambitious troupe of human and wooden actors. Beginning with the tale of a hyena's subtle paw, puppeteers Kohler and Basil Jones build to the story of their latest astonishment: the wonderfully life-like Joey, the War Horse, who trots (and gallops) convincingly onto the stage at the recent March 2011 TED Conference: Ideas worth spreading.

Funny Girl

Postponed - Future Date TBD

Music by Jule Styne

Lyrics by Bob Merrill

Book by Isobel Lennart

Directed  by Bartlett Sher

Say "HELLO GORGEOUS" to a new Funny Girl.

"Life's candy, and the sun's a ball of butter!"

- From the song Don't Rain on My Parade

The musical comedy adventures of an unlikely Ziegfeld girl named Fanny Brice

was the talk of the town and the hottest ticket on Broadway in 1964.

FUNNY GIRL is the rags-to-riches, road-to-stardom story of a legendary entertainer. A love story packed with unforgettable songs: “Don’t Rain on My Parade,” “I’m the Greatest Star,” “The Music That Makes Me Dance,” and the iconic hit “People.” It’s an irresistible backstage drama, a heartbreaking romance, a classic musical that takes you back to the Golden Age of Ziegfeld and the height of burlesque.

Tony Award® winning director Bartlett Sher has reassembled the acclaimed creative team behind his ravishing revival of South Pacific to debut this new production at the Ahmanson.

An all -new production of the legendary romantic musical comedy.

Les Miserables

June 14 - July 31, 2011

Music by Claude-Michel Schönberg

Lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer

Original French Text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel

Directed by Laurence Connor and James Powell

“Les Misérables is the stuff   of  theatrical legend.”

  -The New York Times

Cameron Mackintosh presents a brand new  25th anniversary production of Boublil & Schönberg’s legendary musical, Les Misérables, with glorious new staging and  spectacular reimagined scenery inspired by the  paintings of Victor Hugo.

This new  production has already been acclaimed by critics, fans and new audiences and is breaking  box office records wherever it goes. The Western Mail says “an outstanding success - the best version yet.”
